Dear all,
We have published release 9.12 on GitHub, see https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/releases/tag/v9.12.
Please have a look at the release notes at https://docu.ilias.de/go/pg/215477_35 for more information about this release. This release was initiated due to a important bug fix in the Test & Assessment component, as detailedin the 'Important Changes' section.
Best regards,
Fabian Wolf
Dear ILIAS Admins,
Unfortunately, we have to inform you that, in one particular constellation, the ILIAS test was not showing correct results in ILIAS 9 from 01.05.2024 onwards.
This was the case when test questions were selected randomly (i.e. when 'Random Questions' was selected in a test's 'General Settings') and these questions were scored manually. Manual scoring was saved upon entry but the test results were not updated accordingly. This means that only automatically scored questions (in tests with random questions) were taken into account when calculating the test results.
The error was corrected on 13.05.25 with this commit: https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/commit/af7e43e5a2395817316ad5bfb5f…
Since then, all manual scoring is taken into account when calculating participants' results.
Stephan Kergomard has created a migration ('test.ilManScoringRecalculateReachedPoints') for all existing tests with random questions and manual scoring which have been carried out since 01.05.2024. This re-calculates the results so that these are correct.
Please note: the migration can be extremely resource-intensive if there are lots of such tests with random questions. You will also have to actively initiate the migration yourselves - it won't take place automatically.
This issue went unnoticed as no test case covered the interplay between manual scoring and random questions. The existing test case covering manual scoring only checked tests with fixed questions, which are not affected.
The test cases for ILIAS 11 have been expanded accordingly.
According to Matthias Kunkel, ILIAS version 9.9, in which this issue has been fixed, will be released on 20.05.25.
Thank you for your understanding and best regards,
Denis Strassner, Max Becker, Thomas Joussen, Stephan Kergomard

Liebe ILIAS-Admins,

Dear ILIAS-Admins,
on April 1st the new releases for ILIAS 8 (8.19) and ILIAS 9 (9.8) were
published. The ILIAS 8 branch is a security-fixes only branch as
announced in:
https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/blob/trunk/docs/development/suppor…
In this ILIAS 8 release, however, a security bug introduced a severe new
usability bug in the Test & Assessment component. Thus, a fix for this
bug (https://mantis.ilias.de/view.php?id=44772) was also introduced in
this branch after the release 8.19 tag. Please make sure to checkout the
latest commit on the release_8 branch in order to have a secure and
stable ILIAS 8 release.
Best regards

Dear all,
As announced in today's JF, we would like to invite you to check out
PR9007 – Update ILIAS Installation Documentation
(https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/pull/9007).
With this PR, we're suggesting an update of the Installation Guide at
./docu/configuration/install.md. The new version aims to streamline the
steps needed to have a minimally functional ILIAS installation and
additionally provide information on creating a more secure environment
and more functions. This should make it easier to get started without
missing essential information.
Best regards,
Ann-Christin Gruber and Fabian Wolf
Hi all,
since we just stumbled over a very high webserver load during the start
of the semester on one of our platforms (ILIAS 8) I want to make sure
that you are aware of this issue:
If the notifications in "Administration -> Communication ->
Notifications" are enabled please make sure that your "Refreshinterval"
is big enough (a recommended value would be 60000 (which is 60s in ms)).
Otherwise you might receive a kind of ddos by your users' browsers if
the notifications route is not rate limited :-)
I hope that will help someone. Thanks @mjansen for the hint.
Best regards,
Rob

Dear all,
We have published release 7.30 on GitHub, see https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/releases/tag/v7.30 . This is the last version of ILIAS 7. Please consider upgrading to ILIAS 8 or 9 in the near future.
As there is a need in the community to use a secure ILIAS 7 at least
until end of the year, ILIAS service provider Databay AG will offer a
ILIAS 7 LTS release. This ILIAS 7 LTS release will mainly contain the
security fixes that are made for ILIAS 8 and higher. It is intended to
maintain this security branch until December 2024. The costs will be
jointly financed in a funding pool by those who have the need. Users
who also have the need to use it can contact info(a)databay.de.
Please have a look at the release notes
at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_pg_159938_35.html for more
information about this release.
Best regards,

Dear ILIAS administrators,
We are very happy to announce that the first stable release of our new ILIAS version 9 has been published today, https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/releases/tag/v9.0 . Thanks to all developers, testers, funding partners and supporters for their contributions and support.
The release notes of 9.0 at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_pg_141696_35.html list important changes and changed behaviour in 9.
A list of all new and all abandoned features is available at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_7169_1357.html .
A list of required and supported software is available at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_7458_1357.html
Even though 98% of the test cases are passed, there are still a few small errors in the release that we don't want to hide. Therefore, we will publish an updated list of known issues in ILIAS 9.0 on the release page in the next few days. Of course, we hope that we will be able to fix these bugs quickly and that nothing will stand in the way of a trouble-free use of ILIAS 9.
We would be delighted if you would take a closer look at ILIAS 9 and try it out soon. Please report any bugs that appear in your test environment so that we can try to fix them as soon as possible. And make plans now to switch to ILIAS 9 so that you can make the many improvements in ILIAS available to your users.
Kind regards - and have a nice first of May,

Dear ILIAS administrators,
We are very happy to announce that the first stable release of our new ILIAS version 8 has been published today, https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/releases/tag/v8.0. Thanks to all developers, testers, funding partners and supporters for their contributions and support. Getting ILIAS PHP8 compliant was a lot of work and took longer than expected. But it is an important step for the future and sustainability of ILIAS.
Even though more than 98% of the test cases could be carried out successfully, there are unfortunately still some bugs left in the first ILIAS 8 release. We hope they will be fixed in the next weeks to make ILIAS 8 even a bit more stable as it is now.
The 8.0 release notes at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_pg_138136_35.html <https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_pg_138136_35.html> list important changes and changed behaviour in 8, as well as known issues of 8.0. We recommend to check the list of known issues before updating to ILIAS 8.0 to avoid unpleasant surprises. A list of all new and all abandoned features is available at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_6443_1357.html <https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_6443_1357.html>, a list of required and supported software is available at https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_6922_1357.html <https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_6922_1357.html>.

Dear list members,
in addition to the discussion and public announcement in the ILIAS
JourFixe[1] of 06. Mar 2023, we also push the information onto this
channel that the 'npm'[2] dependencies and thus the 'node_modules'
folder will be removed from the ILIAS codebase in Git with the
integration of PR 5128[3].
All 'npm' dependencies will still be automatically added to the release
builds (linked on the official ILIAS release pages) on GitHub[4]. While
applying this change we will take the chance to also remove unneeded
directories (like test folders) and files from the zip and tar files.
With this change 'npm' will become a requirement for ILIAS installations
based on Git branches/tags. To install the 'npm' dependencies on such
installations, you'll have to execute:
npm install --omit=dev
The --omit=dev flag can be ignored for development installations.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact us (e.g. on
Discord).

Dear ILIAS administrators,
the following information might be relevant for you if you use a customised skin on your ILIAS installation.
On 21 Feb 2022, the Jour fixe decided to include the new learning progress icons also for the releases 6 and 7 (see Mantis report #31804: Status column of learning Progress relies merely on color → https://mantis.ilias.de/view.php?id=31804 <https://mantis.ilias.de/view.php?id=31804> ).
Since the new learning progress icons are different from the SCORM icons, PR#4896 "New Learning Progress Icons for Release 7“ (see https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/pull/4896 <https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/pull/4896> ) created a new folder „/learning_progess“ for the LP icons in the /images folder .
Notice: This affects all existing system styles for releases 6 and 7. If custom LP icons have been defined in a system style, they are not taken into account because the order "learning_progress" does not yet exist in the system style. In this case, ILIAS uses the new LP icons from /templates/default/images/learning_progress.
To be able to use the custom icons, the folder /images/learning_progress must be created in the existing system style and the customised icons must then be moved to the folder.
Kind regards,
Matthias Kunkel

Dear Members of the ILIAS-Community!
Apparently I'm not allowed to send this e-mail at multiple lists at the same time. To make sure you receive it, I'm resending it. I kindly ask you to excuse the inconvenience if you receive it multiple times.
The last Jour Fixe (JF) [1] decided to move the release of ILIAS 9 to march 2024. We have received multiple questions concerning the Feature Freeze for ILIAS 9 afterwards. These we want to answer:
* We hereby confirm the decision of the JF and the new schedule for ILIAS 9 as published in the ILIAS Docu Wiki [2].
* We again emphasize that the focus for everyone MUST be on a timely release of ILIAS 8 at the moment. Any further delay on this release will put the timeline for ILIAS 9 in danger. This we can absolutely not afford. Please make sure to leave the developers as much time to get ILIAS 8 ready as they need. Avoid feature workshops as much as possible. We will not compromise on the 98% goal for passed tests.
* We will reopen the Feature Wiki for new Requests for ILIAS 9. For the discussion of Features at the Jour Fixe:
* We will prioritize components with more than 90% passed tests. If you want to propose a feature for a component not matching this criterion, you may consider offering help to the corresponding tester or the test-coordinator.
* We will prioritize feature request focussed on abandoning functionality.
* We will prioritize feature request focussed on clarifying and simplifying existing functionality.
* We will prioritize requests brought up in the framework of the "Large Developments".
* We will keep an especially close eye on proposals for new functionality in components with a lot of unfixed issues. We will veto developments that introduce functionallity we don't believe we can maintain.
* We will have another Large Development Jour Fixe once ILIAS 8 is out of beta. We will not add new projects to the list, but try to confirm the existing projects and check for progress therein.
The development of ILIAS 8 generated huge gains in code quality and a general modernization of the code base. But it has also shown us once more that we are in over our heads when it comes to the size of our code base. We are very weary of putting this progress into risk and it is very important to us to continue with the current improvement path.
Thank you for all the great work, looking forward to moving ILIAS forward together, and all the best,
Matthias Kunkel and the Technical Board of the ILIAS Society

Dear list members,
due to the change of the ILIAS 9 release schedule[1], the Technical
Board decided that ILIAS 9 will support[2] PHP 8.1 and PHP 8.2. The
support for PHP 8.0 will be dropped. This allows our developers to write
modern and sustainable code and to stay current with the accelerated
release policy of the PHP project.
We are aware that changing PHP versions at such a pace is a new and
exciting development and imposing challenges for many developers (and
administrators), but in order to keep the code of ILIAS in a state,
where it does not silently degrade, we see no other option but following
the lead of the programming language.
If there is anything we can do to help you here or if you have any
suggestions, feel free to contact us, as always.

Hallo zusammen
Fabian & Katharina

Hello all
On 11 August from 14:15 - 15:45 a workshop will take place to jointly concretise the following feature: https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_6387_1357.html
In the first part (14:15 - 14:45) we would like to discuss with the ILIAS users the requirements that institutions have regarding the file upload and the limitation per role / component / use case.
The implementation will later affect all components and thus their maintainers that have implemented a file upload. Therefore, we would like to discuss possible solutions with the affected maintainers in a second part (14:45 - 15:45).
We cordially invite you to participate in this workshop and would be pleased if you register via the corresponding session: https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_sess_11732.html.
The workshop will take place in the following BBB room: https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_xmvc_9523.html
The workshop will be held in German.
Many greetings and see you soon

Dear list members,
we would kindly ask you to use "8.0 Alpha" as product version when
reporting issues for ILIAS 8 in the alpha phase (means: now).
Unfortunately the availability of a configured version in Mantis cannot
be differentiated between product version and target version. The "8.0
Beta1" version should only be used as >target< version and could be used
as >product< version once the beta has been released.
Best regards and thanks in advance,
Michael
on behalf of the ILIAS e.V. and the Technical Board
Dear list members,
as written yesterday: ILIAS is not vulnerable to the current security
issue that is getting wide media coverage. But we have followed the
vendors recommendation and also the official BSI advisory and updated
the logging dependency in the ilServer to the newest available version.
The release manager and the product manager are already working on
preparing a special release out of the regular schedule and we are
confident to be able to announce that at very short notice. If you feel
you can't wait for the release to be bundled and tagged, you can already
update your installation using the "git pull" method as described in

Dear list members,
today we received several requests regarding CVE-2021-44228 (log4j -
0-day exploit).
According to our own analysis ILIAS and (more precisely) the ilServer is
most probably NOT affected by this vulnerabilty.
The java server uses the 1.x release of log4j, which seems to be NOT
impacted if(!) the configuration of the application does not(!) use JNDI
or JMS Appender, which is given for the ilServer.
Nevertheless the maintainer of the ilServer decided to upgrade the log4j
library to the recommended version 2.15.x in all maintained ILIAS
releases (still in progress).
We would like to also create awareness that other applications in your
infrastructure might be impacted by CVE-2021-44228.
We always recommend to keep your ILIAS installations up-to-date. For
more detailed explanations don't hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,

Dear ILIAS admins,
on today’s ILIAS Jour Fixe we have decided to drop the support of PHP versions 7.0 and 7.1 for ILIAS version 5.4, see https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_7081_1357.html#ilPageTocA2154 <https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_7081_1357.html#ilPageTocA2154>.
The main reason is that these two PHP versions are no longer officially maintained and come with libraries that have security problems. The minimum supported version for ILIAS 5.4 is now PHP 7.2, see https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_5047_1357.html <https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_5047_1357.html>
You still can run your ILIAS 5.4 installation with PHP 7.0 / 7.1 - probably without problems (especially when you do not use Excel import). But our developers are no longer obliged to fix related bugs and provide bug fixes that work with PHP 7.0 / 7.1.
Thank you very much for your understanding.
Kind regards,
Matthias Kunkel
P.S.: the announced end of maintenance for ILIAS 5.4 still remains (end of 2021).

Dear list members,
as you have maybe noticed, Composer 2.0[1] was released.
Some of our composer dependencies are not ready for the changed
plugin API of Composer, so Composer 1 MUST still be used for
all maintained branches.
The Technical Board put this topic on it's annual plan for January.
We will keep you posted about this matter.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact us.

Dear list members,
there is an issue[1] with a duplicate forum posting root node created
(for every thread) when upgrading from ILIAS 5.4 to ILIAS 6. The good
thing is: No data is lost. But the original (hidden) root node of the
thread is now visible (as posting), and users are able create child
nodes (by responding) below (which they should not)!
The issue does ONLY occur IF you already upgraded from an ILIAS 5.4.x
installation to ILIAS 6.0 or 6.1, where the hotfix 26 in ILIAS 5.4.x has
been already executed. It does NOT occur when upgrading from ILIAS < 5.4.x.
If you plan to upgrade to ILIAS 6, please wait until the release of
ILIAS 6.2 or install ILIAS 6 from the latest GIT revision. The release
date for 6.2 is currently being considered by the product- and
release-managers. Please watch the schedule at ILIAS.de or the JourFixe
protocols for updates on that.
Furthermore I will provide a new hotfix for ILIAS 6 (which will take
some time for review and tests).
Best regards
Michael

Dear list members,
the Technical Board would like to announce that we decided to support
PHP 7.4 for ILIAS 6.
As mentioned on the 'Required and Supported for ILIAS 6' page [1] we
kept the option open to support the PHP 7.3 succesor with ILIAS 6. Since
at least end of November 2019 we all know that PHP 7.4 is the latest PHP
major release and successor of PHP 7.3. Because the popular operating
systems (like Ubuntu 20.04 LTS) are shipped with PHP 7.4, we hereby
would like to officially state that ILIAS 6 supports PHP 7.4, too. All
of our unit tests are already successfully executed in a TravisCI PHP
7.4 build since last year.
We highly encourage all component maintainers to handle issues being
filed for ILIAS 6/PHP 7.4.
Have a look at our installation documentation [2] for further
information regarding supported software versions.

Dear list,
the "show me in the who-is-online tool" user configuration has been
changed to an "opt-in" due to bug https://mantis.ilias.de/view.php?id=28070
A default setting has been added to the user administration accordingly.
For details, see https://mantis.ilias.de/view.php?id=28070#c67443
The change has been made in all major branches (5.3, 5.4, 6.0, trunk).

Dear list,
tl/dr: Todays releases will escape HTML/JS "inactive" in all page editor
contexts per default. If you trust your authors/users you may reactivate
this under "Administration > Editing > ILIAS Page Editor".
Long version:
To a certain extent ILIAS allows to included HTML/JS content in page
editor content, e.g. in learning modules. This was a desired feature in
the early days of ILIAS and enabled authors to extend the features of
the standard editor.
In the context of wikis, this has been deactivated since the beginning
(HTML is escaped in a way it is not interpreted by browsers), for other
parts like blogs and portfolios it is possible to configure this behaviour.
Even if the page editor can log every change in its "page history",
there has been an ongoing discussion between the trade-off of
flexibility and security (possible XSS attacks), see e.g.
https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_wiki_wpage_5406_1357.html
Since not everyone is aware of the implications and since this has been
reported as a security issue multiple times now, all page editor
contexts will escape HTML in a way it is not interpreted by browsers
anymore. "Administration > Editing > ILIAS Page Editor" has been
extended to allow the configuration for each context individually.
Please note: This is only related to page editor content. HTML Learning
modules and uploaded SCORM packages always allow to upload HTML and
Javascript content. Do not give permission to create these resources to
users you do not trust. Use the RBAC to set permissions accordingly or
deactivate these components completely.
Best regards

Dear administrators,
I just merged this PR [1] that makes the setup from the command line
happen. You'll find more details about how this is supposed to work in
the README [2] for the CLI based setup.
I kindly ask for your help in testing that program. I'm only a single
developer with his developer requirements, but you people will
(hopefully) use that program as well. Does it work on you machine? In
your scenario? For your configuration? I also only own a limited number
of ILIAS installations I can run the update on. Please check (in a safe
testing environment, of course) if your existing installations can be
updated with the program. Does it stop somewhere? Is there something
unexpected happening? Does it break your installation?
I'm looking forward to your reports in our issue tracker [3]. Please
make sure you describe your scenario and your problem in some detail,
the innards of the setup can be delicate and hard to fix at times and
any information will help.
Please be aware that this is (hopefully) only the beginning of that
program. If you want to participate in the further development of the
setup in the next release, please reach out to me, I would be glad to
get more contributors.
If you have any feedback or questions, feel free to contact me as well.
Best regards!

Dear developers and admins of ILIAS, dear ILIAS service providers,
With this mail I would like to inform you about changed dates in the ILIAS roadmap. Reason for this is a request by the General Page Layout Revision group that needs more time to complete its tasks and development for ILIAS 6. I have discussed this request seriously with the Technical Board and decided to agree and to postpone the deadline for coding completed for one month.
The new roadmap for ILIAS 6 is now the following:
Coding Completed at November 29, 2019
Completion of test cases and documentation in Feature Wiki at November 29, 2019
Release of 6.0_beta1 at December 03, 2019
Start of testing ILIAS 6 at December 04, 2019
Completion of all test cases until February 28, 2020
Completion of bug fixing and retesting until April 09, 2020
Publishing ILIAS 6.0 (stable) at April 15, 2020
This additional time to complete the planned page layout revision is important to get a much better beta version of ILIAS 6 which then can be tested easily and efficiently from December on.
I apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards,
Matthias Kunkel

Dear ILIAS-developers and -admins,
we would like to inform you about the introduction of a new coding style guideline for ILIAS-code [1], why, how and when we want to introduce it and how you will be involved in this process.
The coding style guideline we will introduce is the well known PSR-2 [2] plus some rather minor additions. We believe it to be very valuable for projects to stick to a common style: it is easier to read code with a consistent layout, it is easier to find your way around in code if you aren't distracted from differences in styling and, finally, we all have one rather minor point less to argue about. Currently there already exists a coding style guideline for ILIAS, but it isn't followed consistently. We further believe that the value of coding style guidelines doesn't only apply to single projects, but also to a language community as a whole. If people share a common guideline when writing PHP, the benefits will also apply when switching projects and newcomers to ILIAS won't be distracted by ILIAS specialties in the coding style. To introduce a consistent coding style that also follows standards of the PHP-community, we decided to introduce PSR-2 with some additions.
We intentionally only focussed on directions regarding formatting of code and dismissed questions regarding naming or patterns like "How to name interfaces or classes?" or "When to use early return?". We feel that these require more effort in discussions and want to pick low hanging fruits via this proposal first.
This guideline replaces the one in the development guide [3].
We know that this introduction of a coding style guideline will cause some disruption, among core-developers as well as among devs who maintain patched versions of ILIAS. We still feel that having no implemented guideline is not an option anymore and try to make the move to PSR-2 plus additions as painless as possible. The introduction will benefit us all long-term.
The introduction will proceed in three phases:
Starting in June 2019 every change in a maintained ILIAS-version or the trunk must be made after the coding style in the targeted file(s) is fixed. The style fixes must be made in a single commit with the message "CS fix". The desired changes should be made afterwards and in one or many separate commits. If I would, for example, want to fix a bug in Modules/StudyProgramme/classes/class.ilObjStudyProgrammeGUI.php I would first apply the fix to the coding style to the file, commit it with the message "CS fix", then make the desired changes to fix the issue, and also commit them. Maintainers may also move a complete component in all maintained branches and the trunk to the new style at their own discretion. This will gradually move some parts of all of our branches to the new coding style while maintaining the possibility to find a responsible person via git blame and cherry-picking changes from other branches.
Once the beta-release is ready and branched in October, we will apply the new coding style to the rest of our codebase in all maintained branches and the trunk. This will be done via one big commit per branch. This will break patches, PRs that are open at that point in time and also git blame for parts of the codebase that haven't been modified before. Please be aware that this will happen and reserve time for required actions accordingly.
After this single commit that fixes the rest of our codebase, our CI-server [4] will automatically check if new code respects our coding style guideline. We are looking into the details regarding the necessary measures to ensure the whole ILIAS code base keeps respecting the guideline also in the future. One important elements will be the actions taken by the CI-server if code does not respect the guideline.
To ease the introduction and also maintain the coding style in the long-run, we will supply you with some material:
* A documentation that shows how you could introduce tooling on your dev-machine that automatically maintains the coding style.
* A configuration for PHPStorm for the coding style.
* A shell-script that fixes the coding style for a single file or a directory.
We are exited to make this move with you and look forward to have a consistent style in out codebase. If you have any doubts, questions or suggestions, feel free to contact us at tb(a)lists.ilias.de
Shout out to Nils Theen (@legionth) for pushing this issue. Thanks!

Dear developers/administrators/users,
as announced at the ILIAS development conference in Cologne, the
Technical Board is looking for volunteers interested in founding/joining
a/the ILIAS security group. This is a valuable contribution to the
project and we welcome participants with all backgrounds, so you don’t
have to be a security research specialist (though you of course may be
one). We’re also looking for helpers with strong communication skills,
documentation writers and evangelists.
The group will first be tasked with supporting our security process [1],
i.e. answering to incoming security issues, operating the security
tracker and follwing up on issues. We hope to expand the tasks of the
group in the future to further develop our security process.
Interested people will be invited to a VC meeting (a Doodle link will be
provided) where the security process will be introduced in detail to all
participants and then we’ll see to find that proper role in our team for
you.

Dear ILIAS administrators,
the NIC registration of new ILIAS installations or the subsequent request for a NIC ID for an already running ILIAS is not working since two days. Reason for this is a new URL of the NIC server due to internal reorganisation of servers and domains. The hard-coded address of the NIC server is no longer supported and therefore registration fails.
The problem has now been fixed in all currently maintained ILIAS versions. If you want to install a new ILIAS or get a NIC ID for an already existing installation, please update your ILIAS to the latest version from GitHub and then run the NIC registration.
Thanks and best regards,
Matthias

Dear ILIAS administrators,
Over two and a half years after having published the first stable release of ILIAS 5.1, the end of maintenance of this version of ILIAS is just around the corner. ILIAS 5.1.28 announced for August 01, 2018 will be the last maintained ILIAS release of version 5.1. There are no additional releases planned. Additionally, ILIAS maintainers do not need to fix 5.1 related bugs after August 01. Of course, bug fixing of all issues in 5.2 and 5.3 will be continued.
We recommend to migrate your existing 5.1 installations to 5.3 as soon as possible. If you are not able to change to a maintained version of ILIAS, please feel free to contract a service provider that merges ILIAS bug fixes into your 5.1 installation. Please note that the test installation for 5.1 will also be shut down with the end of lifetime of ILIAS 5.1.

Matthias Kunkel

Dear ILIAS-Admins
Due to a quite old bug #0012860 storing 4-Byte-Characters (such as Emojis) to the Database lead to losing data since MySQL just stripped away all text after such a character. Therefore the ILIAS society funded a filter in the database-layer which filters those characters and replace them with a „?“. The Bugreport is https://www.ilias.de/mantis/view.php?id=12860
This fix now has been published in 5.2, 5.3 and trunk.
This fix does not restore already corrupted data in the database since this is not possible. E.G. broken Wiki-Pages which are inaccessible still will be broken after updating. The fix just prevents from breaking more content in your ILIAS.
Best regards
Fabian
