Liebe Kollegen,

Join the Apereo Foundation, Heidi Ellis and Gregory Hislop, for a
presentation and Q&A on *_Wednesday, May 8, at 11:00AM Eastern U.S. time._*
Open source has become a major part of the software industry. In
addition to open source supported by volunteer communities, open source
also receives substantial, sustained investment from corporations and
other organizations. Open source is also a major source of software
innovation. In spite of this broad impact, students learn little about
open source, and are only dimly aware of it. This presentation will
summarize where teaching open source stands and explore the challenges
of changing computing education to better prepare students for the open
source world.
*Heidi* *Ellis* is a Professor in the Computer Science and Information
Technology department at Western New England University. Heidi has been
active in software engineering education for over 20 years. She has been
involving students in humanitarian free and open source software (HFOSS)
since 2006 and has been co-PI on multiple NSF grants to support this
effort. She has multiple publications and presentations related to
student participation in HFOSS.
*Gregory Hislop *is a Professor and former Senior Associate Dean in the
College of Computing and Informatics at Drexel University. His research
interests focus on software engineering practice, technology in
education, and computing for social good in education. He has been a
Principal Investigator on a series of NSF grants to develop HFOSS
education and broaden participation in computing. Prior to Drexel,
Gregory spent almost 20 years working in the software and IT industry.
